"I am grateful to JHF Uganda for restoring my dignity, protecting my rights and giving me hope ."
I am Grace Lanyero (not real name) and I have mobility disability. For a long time, I lived in fear of losing my land that my parents had given me while they were still alive.
All began in 2021 when my brother began to threaten me and claimed that my land was of no use to me because of my disability. He started subjecting me to harsh, abusive, and degrading language, making my life very difficult and stressful.
I felt helpless and unsafe until JHF Uganda intervened through their legal support services. They acted quickly, engaged local authorities and the police, and ensured that my situation was taken seriously. My brother was arrested, and through the guidance provided, he came to understand that his actions were unlawful and unjust.
He chose a peaceful resolution and committed himself in writing before JHF Uganda, the police and the local authorities that he would never interfere with my land and from then we are living in harmony. He now supports me by helping to cultivate my land, which provides me with food and some income. Most importantly, I now live in peace and can sleep at night without fear.
I am deeply grateful to JHF Uganda for restoring my dignity, protecting my rights, and giving me hope for a better and more secure future.
The Impact
Grace now lives peacefully on her land, free from fear and abuse, with her rights protected and her dignity restored—showing that justice can transform lives and restore hope.
During a legal outreach at the Ntinda School for the Deaf, JHF Uganda provided free legal consultations to students, teachers, and parents. Through the session, it emerged that some students were facing serious forms of domestic and sexual violence. In response, the team conducted sensitization on the legal implications of such violations and shared reporting channels to ensure that affected individuals can seek timely support and protection.
To ensure sustained access to justice, JHF Uganda, in collaboration with the school administration, established a legal desk at the school. This platform now serves as a safe and accessible point where students, parents, and staff can receive ongoing legal guidance tailored to their needs.
In a show of mutual commitment to inclusion, the school also offered to train JHF Uganda staff in sign language at a subsidized cost—strengthening communication and deepening the organisation’s capacity to serve the persons with hearing impairment effectively.
The Headteacher expressed appreciation for the partnership, noting the positive impact of these efforts in promoting safety, awareness, and access to justice for the students.
The Impact
Students at Ntinda School for the Deaf now have a safe place to report abuse and access legal support, showing that awareness and inclusion can protect vulnerable communities and strengthen justice for all.
